Rhythm, Romanian and Rroma
3R, the characteristic of my folkdance workshops, for everyone from
7 to 77!
If you see 3R, it means: pleasure, learning both very traditional
dances and self-made choreographies with traditional steps and to
traditional music, and … freedom in dancing!
Rhythm is recognizable, in music and dancing. Folkdance, and also
Romanian folkdance, changes under the influence of time: young people
dance differently than their grandparents. And freedom? Dance of Rroma
is freedom. Freedom in improvisation, of every individual. I try to
loosen up the participants, get them away from simply learning new
steps, encourage them to show their own input, to follow their own
rhythm!Rhythm in music
With young students (basis and continued education) I usually work
with rhythm in music. Not only is it possible to play a rhythm, you
can also dance a rhythm. Elements of this workshop are: simple dance
movements; how to turn your own body or any object into an instrument;
play a rhythm with the whole group. Willingness to cooperate develops
through dancing on music such as Lindy Hop, Charleston and folklore
music; together, in your own choreography, with existing objects such
as Boomwhackers (short plastic tubes) and drums.
This workshop is also recommended as an inspiring, flashy and motivating
activity for a group of teachers or other employees.
I will finish the workshop with a short tap-dance presentation danced
to rhythms which are played by participants themselves.Rhythm in dance
For the students of professional dance schools, I teach classes with
rhythmic styles such as tap dance, hambone, Romanian folkdance and
international dancing. The goal is for the students to develop their
(technical) skills and their self esteem. My experience as a teacher
and as former professional dancer gives me the notion that rhythm
is a fundamental component of music and of dancing. For the students
knowledge of tap-dance, hambone and world dancing offers a broad range
of possibilities to develop their rhythmic, technical and social skills.
Rhythmic knowledge and skills can make a contribution to the development
of other dancing techniques of the students.
